When it first announced its intention to launch a 'Sport' variant, Land Rover promised a radical departure from the chunky styling we'd come to expect. The Range Rover Sport was more streamlined and athletic-looking than most Range Rovers, with more of an on-road emphasis. But to satisfy those who like to get dirty every now and then, the Range Rover Sport came with Land Rover's Terrain Response, which varies the electronic set-up according to the surface you're driving on.
The RAC reviewers said "What you're buying with the Range Rover Sport is the off-road capability and technical brilliance of the Discovery 3 matched to the style and ambience of the Range Rover" before boldly concluding: "It's probably the best vehicle Land Rover has made to date."
The Sport got major updates for the 2009 and 2014 model years, although as the car had already proved its prowess off-road, these revisions focused more on internal enhancements, including increasing the range of optional equipment.
These helped the Range Rover compete head-on with rivals from the likes of Mercedes and Porsche, who were now determined to muscle in on the luxury SUV market. However, reviewers such as the team from Parker's noted that levels of comfort were vastly increased on the later (2009-on) cars, with the quality of the materials inside also a big step-up.
The Range Rover Sport parts enhancements included a new centrally-mounted colour touchscreen, which controls major equipment such as the sat nav, stereo, heating and ventilation and telephone system.
