The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a distinct model within the Land Rover range of SUVs, and not merely a sportier iteration of the very popular Discovery. It’s been a huge success for Jaguar Land Rover since it was introduced in late-2014 to replace the Freelander, and has been the best-selling Land Rover model for several years.
The introduction of the Discovery Sport also marked the launch of Discovery models as a separate range of cars, alongside Range Rover, under the Land Rover umbrella. And whereas the Freelander had ditched seven-seat options from its range, these were reinstated with the introduction of the Discovery Sport.
While the Freelander name had introduced Land Rover to the market for medium-sized SUVs, it’s been somewhat tainted by reliability problems, while it was believed that buyers considered the Discovery moniker to be more prestigious. The fact that the person responsible for the design of the Freelander was also charged with working on the Discovery Sport reinforces the strong links between the old and the new.
The Discovery Sport is the first JLR SUV to feature a unibody, rather than a more traditional body-on-frame construction, and although the design roots for this come from Ford, 90% of the Land Rover Discovery Sports parts are new, and tailored to the specific demands of off-road use.
In terms of Land Rover Discovery Sport parts, a new multi-link rear suspension was introduced to make room for the car's folding rear seats and spare wheel. For better off-road and wading performance, the Discovery Sport has an increased wading depth of up to 60cm (24 inches), and some parts of the Land Rover Discovery Sport’s lower front bumper can be removed. On the road, the Discovery Sport earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, the best given to any small off-roader at the time.
