In 2007, the iconic Defender had a substantial re-launch. This brought the introduction of a four-cylinder, 2.4-litre diesel engine, which was the first engine put into a Defender built externally, by Ford, replacing the five-cylinder Td5 engine that had given excellent service since 1998. However, it fell foul of tighter emissions regulations.
Its lifespan also coincided with the SUVs growing popularity, as well as a huge increase in the capabilities of electronic driver aids. That meant modified Land Rover Defender parts for the 2007 model focused on improvements to its long-distance cruising abilities, including a six-speed gearbox for the first time, and bringing the cabin more in line with standards more familiar to drivers graduating to a Land Rover from a large family car.
EU rules had also banned the use of inward-facing passenger seats, as featured on previous models. This meant that this model replaced the previous one's four-passenger seats with just two. Yet, of course, its designers knew they couldn't afford to do any of this at a cost to the off-road prowess, which had earned the Defender such cult status.
Sold in more than 140 countries, models of this Defender have seen action around the world in roles such as fire engines, ambulances and breakdown recovery vehicles. With a further update in 2012, Land Rover announced that this would be the last revamp before a completely new model, which was needed to meet new pedestrian safety standards. This used another Ford Duratorq engine, this time slimmed-down to 2.2 litres, although still producing the same power and torque.
